Rainbow of Player Personalities
Due to the competitive nature of poker, I came into my interviews expecting most players to have the cutthroat, aggressive mindset that stereotypes most players you see on television. To my surprise, as I researched poker, it became apparent that there are many different types players that you encounter at the table. 1: The Just for Fun Player This type of player normally plays in lower betting games and plays as a leisurely activity. Most players (including myself) fall into this category, and do not view winning as a necessary part of having a good time. For these players the goal of the game is to have a good time and enjoy the experience. Out of personal experience, these players tend to occasionally win, but more often than not lose their chips. But, for these players the experience is often more valuable than chips they wager. 2: The Noob These players are still learning the game and as result very rarely win. Players of this variety often only play by their cards and often make many mistakes. For these players the best way to improve is by just getting involved and watching how the game flows. As they learn, they often become better players and grow into the “Just for Fun” type of player. |
3: The “Pro”
This type of player is the stereotypical player you will encounter in poker. After watching and playing countless hours of poker movies and online poker, these players talk a big game and try to appear very intimidating. They are often better than the average “Just for Fun Player,” and try to take advantage of “Noob” players to gain a financial advantage. These players try to act like big-fish, but can be quickly swallowed up at a table with experienced players. 4: The Actual Professional This player is elite in the poker world. They are able to read your hand with just a glance at your switching eyeball, and are not someone to mess with. Occasionally these expert players rely on poker as a portion of their income and take it seriously. The true sharks of the poker sea, these players are dominating card players who take no mercy when it comes to competitive play. |
