Tribute to Hayano
Known as the original auto ethnography, “Poker Faces” by David Hayano is an innovative book about the subculture of gamblers. It started out as a doctoral thesis, but as it expanded, “Poker Faces: The Life and Work of Professional Card Players” became the basis for a new form of research orientated writing. By being a member of the in-group being written about, Hayano was able to describe the difficulties, stress, and emotions involved with an insight and perspective never attempted before.
In honor of Hayano, this project is a personal and modern take on the in group of poker. In my own style of auto-ethnographic writing, I try to communicate my interviewee’s feelings through my personal experience. While Hayano focused on his table experiences, I try to convey other player's experiences through my translation of events. Writing about poker has its difficulties due to the repetitive nature of the mechanics of the game, but the complexity of the inner minds of the players allows the writing to be unique and flowing. While Hayano was the originator of poker auto-ethnography, I am his student, and this site is designed to reflect some his styles and work. |
